Fever Pitch

7.3/10

First of all, don't expect to maintain your status as "chick-flick" free after seeing this movie. It is a romantic comedy no matter how you say it, but Jimmy Fallon saves the film from becoming Ever After and ending up in your sister's "watch when I'm depressed" genre. The story is fun, but a bit weak and predictable, and I found myself changing the plot in my mind to make it more interesting. Drew Barrymore spits out the lines with her down-syndrome slowness and distorted face gestures like usual, which didn't destroy the movie, but didn't add especially much. Any true credit towards the movie should be directed toward Jimmy Fallon, who displays a wonderful normality in his humor. The guy is just genuinely, cleverly funny and you just want the whole movie to follow him, watching him teaching, talking with the neighbor, playing scrabble, whatever. I was a bit suprised when I found out it was a product of the Farrelly brothers (Dumb and Dumber, There's Something About Mary), but thinking back reminds me of moments during the film where I thought, "This seems too silly/wierd to be in the movie."

I think I might puke if I see Drew Barrymore get hit in the head with a baseball one more time. After 20 or 30 viewings in previews and on talk shows, I would think most people would have gotten over the slapstick by now, but no, there was a roar of laughter from the audience. Come on, it was only half funny the first time.
