Serenity

8.5/10

Why do people like Science Fiction? Is it because of the "science" part - the new technologies and space explorations and wierd looking aliens? I submit that it is not. People like science fiction because of the "fiction" part. Good sci-fi creates wonderful epics of the future of our race or another while still raising social, ethical, and religious issues that face our present world. We didn't like Star Trek because of Klingons, but rather because of the struggle that Data had in understanding what it means to be human.

This is the main reason why I enjoyed Serenity. It had body parts, if you will - brains, guts, and even a little heart. It didn't count on special effects, which were good, but not stunning. It had a good story, good dialogue, and gave me a few genuine laughs I wasn't counting on. The script had an interesting way of taking cliche elements of sci-fi adventures and making fun of them, not to the point of absurdity, but enough to make the characters seem a touch more human.

(in a very solemn tone)
"Do you really think any of us are going to make it out of here alive?"
"Well, ... I might"

I think you should see it. Be ready to jump a few times and be grossed out a few more, but it's really quite a enjoyable ride.
